Get ready to light up your fall! The Downtown Balloon Glow returns Friday, October 16, and Saturday, October 17, 2026, bringing colorful hot air balloons to the heart of Downtown Durango.
Now celebrating its tenth year, the Downtown Balloon Glow has become a favorite fall tradition for locals and visitors alike. This free, family-friendly event takes place on the 500 block of Main Avenue, right in front of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Depot. Whether you’re bringing the kids, meeting up with friends or making a night of it in Downtown, this is one fall event you won’t want to miss.
Watch Downtown Durango Light Up
The fun begins around 6 pm, when the balloons start to inflate along Main Avenue. As the sun goes down, the glow begins at approximately 6:30 pm.
Visitors can get up close to watch balloon pilots and crews in action as the giant balloons fill the 500 block with light and color. Kids especially love seeing the balloons up close!
You’ll also find “candlesticks” — balloon baskets and burners without the canopy attached. These give kids an opportunity to get an even closer look at the baskets and burners used to operate a hot air balloon.
Bring your camera! The glowing balloons surrounded by historic Downtown Durango make for some pretty incredible fall photos.

Come Early and Make a Night of It Downtown
Why wait until 6 p.m. to head downtown? Come early, grab dinner, browse the shops, and then walk over to the Balloon Glow.

Friday and Saturday evenings can be busy during Balloon Glow weekend, so plan a little extra time for dinner and make reservations when available.
There is also great shopping in this block of Downtown. Some of the unique shops include Overland, A Shared Blanket, ReLove Consign and Design, and three new businesses – Animas Apron Kitchen Company, Uncommon Scents and Durango Bites.
Parking for the Downtown Balloon Glow
With Main Avenue closed around the event area, plan to park a few blocks away and enjoy a short walk through downtown.
Friday: The Durango Transit Center parking lot is a convenient option. Parking is $5 for the entire day on Friday, and parking is free after 5 pm.
Saturday: Parking is even easier — all City parking lots are free on Saturday and every parking meter is also free.
Give yourself a little extra time to find a parking spot, particularly as the event gets closer to its 6 pm start time.
Road Closures
To make room for balloons, crews, and spectators, crews will close roads around the event.
The 500 block of Main Avenue and E. 5th Street from Main to the alley will be closed to vehicle traffic for the Balloon Glow.
If you’re planning to dine or shop downtown before the event, arriving early is a great option. Park once, enjoy downtown, and then walk to the Balloon Glow.
Remember: The Balloon Glow Is Weather Dependent
Hot air balloons need the right conditions to inflate and glow safely. The Downtown Balloon Glow is weather- and wind-dependent, and the schedule is subject to change.
Wind, storms, or other unfavorable conditions may delay, modify, or cancel balloon activities. Check for updates before heading downtown if the weather looks questionable.
